The funeral details have been confirmed for the late Irish Olympian and European gold medallist, Ciara Mageean, who sadly died over the weekend aged 34.
Ciara Mageean passed away having previously announced earlier this year that she had been diagnosed with stage four bowel cancer, with a likely terminal diagnosis. The Olympian has been widely recognised for her honesty and candour when she spoke about about her diagnosis.
Her death was confirmed yesterday with a statement shared on her Instagram account.
“At 6.30am this morning, Ciara lost her battle with cancer, surrounded by her loved ones. A beloved daughter, sister, wife, friend and inspiration to so many, she will be deeply missed", a statement read yesterday. “Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam".
She won a gold medal at the European Championships in 1,500, Ciara Mageean also competed at two Olympic Games, holding Irish national records in 800m, 1,000m, 1,500m and one mile races.
Ciara Mageean will repose at her parent's home on Biallyphillip Road in their native Portaferry Co Down from today. People are welcome to come to house between 10am and 1pm, and between 3pm and 9pm.
Her funeral will take place tomorrow, with the house private, taking place at St Patrick's Church in Ballyphillip, followed by burial at the adjoining cemetery.
Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to Bowel Cancer Ireland, and Marie Curie, the hospice charity.
Ciara Mageean and her long term partner, Thomas Moran got married three weeks ago on a ceremony at Belfast City Hall, before celebrating at Darver Castle in Dundalk, Co Louth, over the October Bank Holiday weekend.
