A woman who was once given days to live is celebrating being the world’s longest living survivor of a lung transplant. Vera Dwyer from Sligo travelled to the UK thirty years ago for the procedure as it wasn’t available in Ireland at the time.
The 77-year-old great-grandmother has been awarded a gold medal by the Irish Heart and Lung Transplant Association for her achievement. Vera had no idea that she was to be honoured at the Heart and Lung Transplant Department at The Mater Hospital this afternoon.
