Roy Keane has heavily criticised the WAGs attending the matches at the FIFA World Cup.

The topic came up as Keane sat with fellow ex footballers Gary Neville and Ian Wright on their popular show, The Overlap, where they also chatted about all things sport, before moving onto to a different topic entirely.

While chatting with Neville and Wright, Keane said that he cannot stand the wives and girlfriends of footballers at these events and how they carry on, and his general abhor for the existing WAG culture.

The term 'WAG' was first mentioned in the British media in 2002. It then caught fire during the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Baden-Baden, Germany. Here, the wives and girlfriends of the English players caught the attention in a big way, as they dressed to the nines as they sat in the stands watching their partners play in the matches.

At the time, these partners included David Beckham's wife, Victoria Beckham, Wayne Rooney's spouse, Coleen Rooney and Girls Aloud star Cheryl Cole, who was married to then England defender, Ashley Cole at the time. They were three of the prominent WAGs who were splashed all over the media at the time.

Opening up about what he is finding a cause of irritation, Keane instantly had the rest of the panel reduced to tears.

"The World Cup, when all the players' wives and families are going to the match, all the wives are in the jerseys with the players' names on the back...WOW", Keane exclaimed.

He continued: "Children is fine, but the wives and partners wearing their jerseys, with their name on the back. wow".

In response, Ian Wright who was trying to construct a sentence in the midst of his huge guffaw, said: "I don't mind that".

Keane replied: "You not with me on that page? A year later, they are separated, most of them. And they're all getting pictures, and they're all getting pictures, and they're pointing at a Jimmy or Johnny on the back, wow. We know who you are married to".

"Children is fine, the partners is ridiculous. All sitting in the same family section, I've got my jersey, have you got yours? I'm not having it".

Wright replied: "I don't mind it Roy... Her husband is playing and she's proud of him and she wants to wear his shirt, it seems as simple as that".

However, Roy Keane was unwavering in his dislike of the whole culture, claiming that the wives and girlfriends only appear at World Cups.

"They only do it at the World Cup. You don't see it at Old Trafford or Anfield every week. So what's with the World Cup?", he said. "Imagine a woman going, 'I'm going to put a football jersey on today with my husband's name on the back... Wow".
