An ex-street gang leader has been convicted of murder for his role in the drive-by shooting death of hip-hop star Tupac Shakur.

Duane 'Keffe D' Davis, 63, was accused of orchestrating the drive-by shooting that killed the influential rap star.

A jury in Clark County, Nevada, deliberated for nearly three hours before finding Davis guilty.

According to RTE, Davis was found guilty of a single count of first-degree murder with a deadly weapon.

After the verdict was read, Shakur's sister cried and hugged the prosecutors.

Davis is facing a life sentence in prison without the possibility of parole at his sentencing that is due to take place on October 13th.

According to reports, Binu Palal of the Clark County District Attorney's Office told jurors that due to the code of respect in street gangs, Davis "could not let the beating of his nephew slide."

"So what did he do? He acquired a firearm, got his group together, and went hunting for M. Shakur," Mr Palal said according to RTE.

According to The Guardian, prosecutors said that while his story changed over the years, Davis was repeatedly seen in the white Cadillac where the shots were fired from.

They said that although Davis did not pull the trigger, evidence showed that he had called for the gunfire as he was a powerful gang leader.

Davis' lawyer Michael Sanft told jurors in his closing statement that his client's story could not be corroborated by evidence and should not be trusted. According to RTE, he also claimed that the case was tainted by police corruption, mismanagement and missing files.

"You’re reading a book that is fiction and not fact, but the state wants you to believe that this is somehow a confession," Sanft said, quoting Davis' memoir.

Under Nevada law, Davis can be charged with murder even if he did not pull the trigger.
