Kevin Cronin Admits Kevin Cronin Band Can’t Match REO Speedwagon’s Pull

Kevin Cronin has been forced to confront a sobering truth: the draw of a household name can eclipse the music itself.

After stepping away from REO Speedwagon last year in the wake of “irreconcilable differences” with bassist Bruce Hall, Cronin set out under the Kevin Cronin Band banner. He brought familiar faces, guitarist Dave Amato and drummer Bryan Hitt, along for the ride, and joined forces with Styx and Don Felder on the Brotherhood of Rock tour. The intent was clear: maintain the magic without the baggage. The reality, however, has been far more difficult.

“This tour has been a delight, but not without its challenges,” Cronin told Ultimate Classic Rock. “You can’t overestimate the power of the name REO Speedwagon and that ubiquitous, winged logo. They mean a lot to people.”

The issue, he says, is perception. Under the REO name, the promise is clear. Under his own name, curiosity replaces certainty, and that curiosity hasn’t translated into the kind of ticket sales required to keep the operation viable. “I can sit here and say that the Kevin Cronin Band is doing the same thing until I’m blue in the face,” he explained, “but when people see the Kevin Cronin Band, there’s a question
‘I wonder what this is gonna be?’”

Cronin’s conclusion is blunt: the Kevin Cronin Band will not continue as a full-time touring entity. Crew members will be freed for other projects after the current run, and several dates, including shows in Georgia, Alabama, and Nevada, have been cancelled. A lone exception remains: he’ll honour his spot on the Rock Legends Cruise in February 2026.

“My plan was always to keep the organisation together, but there are challenges around that are just overwhelming,” he admitted. “Again, as REO Speedwagon, no problem. But that’s just not available to me now.”

As for REO itself, Bruce Hall disputes Cronin’s framing, insisting it was Kevin who walked away, not the rest of the band. With tensions still in the air, a full reconciliation feels distant. For now, Cronin plays on, but without the wings that once guaranteed flight.
