Paul Daniel “Ace” Frehley, the original lead guitarist and co-founder of the legendary rock band KISS, passed away at age 74, his family confirmed.

His family said he died peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, and expressed that they were “completely devastated and heartbroken.” In their statement, they remembered his laughter, his kindness, and declared that “the magnitude of his passing is of epic proportions.”

In late September, Frehley reportedly had a fall in his home studio, which led to hospitalization and serious complications, including a brain bleed. He canceled scheduled tour dates due to ongoing medical issues. According to reports, he was placed on life support before passing away.

Frehley was a defining creative force in KISS’s formative years, famed for his “Spaceman” persona: silver-tinged face paint, dramatic stage effects, and a showmanship that often went beyond earthly bounds. His solos and riffs helped shape the band’s signature sound, and his performances often involved guitars that emitted smoke and pyrotechnics.

A longtime anecdote from his career recalls a near-fatal moment on stage in 1976, when an ungrounded metal railing electrocuted him mid-show. He later channeled the experience into writing the song “Shock Me,” which became one of his signature contributions to KISS’s repertoire.

KISS formed in 1973, comprising Frehley, Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, and Peter Criss. Over the years, they became known for spectacular live shows—with face paint, leather outfits, platform boots, fire, and smoke—and major hits like Rock and Roll All Nite and God of Thunder.

Frehley left KISS in 1982 amid creative differences, but rejoined in 1996 for a high-profile reunion that lasted until 2002. The original lineup was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2014.

Even after leaving permanently, Frehley maintained a solo career (and with his band Frehley’s Comet), releasing a string of albums—including 10,000 Volts in 2024.

Following news of Frehley’s death, his former bandmates Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons issued a joint tribute: “We are devastated by the passing of Ace Frehley. He was an essential and irreplaceable rock soldier … He is and will always be a part of KISS’s legacy.” Original drummer Peter Criss also expressed his sorrow, saying he was present “to the end” and recognized how many lives Frehley’s music touched.

He leaves behind his wife, Jeanette, and daughter, Monique.

His influence extended far beyond KISS walls: countless guitarists cite him as an early inspiration, and his bold theatricality changed how rock could look and feel on stage.

Ace Frehley’s passing marks the loss of the first original member of KISS to depart the stage forever. His showmanship, musical daring, and fearless spirit will resonate long after the last chord.
