An unheard early interview with Nirvana band members Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic from 1989 have just been released.

The interview was carried out by Manchester journalist and lead singer with the Membranes, John Robb. The NME reports that the tape was recorded in New York City as the band undertook their first US tour to promote their debut record, ‘Bleach’.

Posessions

In the interview, Cobain and Novoselic can be heard talking about their roots and their wish to escape. They also talk about their love of performing live, how their writing process was evolving and their desires for the future.

Cobain said to Robb, “I’ve been writing songs for six years in this style of music” and that the last “two years” saw him and Novoselic get “really serious” about their music after being in and out of other bands previously. Both talk about starting the band in Aberdeen, Washington, to escape a future of logging – one of the town’s main employment industries.
