Reconstruction of the bridge at George’s Dock Bridge, which supports the Luas Red Line in the Docklands area, remains on schedule and services are set to resume by the end of next month. Authorities say the works are progressing well and remain aligned with the end-November target.

The bridge suffered major fire damage in August, causing the suspension of Luas services between Connolly Station and The Point. Operators note that the existing structure was found to be “structurally compromised” and required demolition and full replacement rather than mere repair. A replacement bus service was put in place for the affected section of the network, accepting valid Luas and TFI Leap cards.

According to the official update, the reconstruction “remains on schedule for the end of November”. During this period the bus replacement service has operated at regular intervals, giving commuters an alternative while the major works continue unabated. Transport authorities apologise for the inconvenience but stress the importance of delivering a safe, fully restored link in the Docklands.

Commuters and businesses in the area say they’re relieved at the prospect of the Luas returning to normal. One local trader commented: “It’s been a hassle, but once the trams are back through here things will pick up again.” Meanwhile, project managers say no further significant delays have been reported and the timeline is being met despite the complexity of the job.

Background to the incident shows that the fire broke out on the evening of 19 August 2025, in the vicinity of George’s Dock. Fire crews had to use specialist equipment to control the blaze which caused damage not only to the bridge deck but also to overhead power infrastructure and tram track alignment. The scale of the damage initially raised fears of a protracted closure, but the decision to rebuild anew has helped set a firm completion date.

For the Dublin transport network the reopening of the Docklands section of the Luas Red Line will restore direct connectivity between the city centre and the growing business, residential and cultural zones on the waterfront. It also means the network can redirect capacity back to its previous levels, easing pressure on parallel bus services introduced during the disruption.

With the date firmly in sight and works declared “on schedule”, passengers can expect full reinstatement of Luas Red Line services through the Docklands by late-November.
