Meath: Man Dies In Hospital Following Three-Vehicle Crash

A man in his 50s who was critically injured in a three-vehicle crash in Co Meath last month has died.

The collision happened on the R132 at Smithstown, Julianstown shortly after 2am on Saturday, 15 August.

The man was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda with critical injuries following the crash.

He died in hospital on 4 September.

A family liaison officer has been appointed to support his family.

Gardaí said two cars were travelling southbound towards Dublin at around 2.06am on 15 August when one collided with the rear of the other.

The driver of the first vehicle, a man in his 50s, was uninjured.

Both cars were then pulled in at the side of the road.

Around 10 minutes later, a third vehicle collided with the rear of the second car.

The man who was driving the second vehicle was standing at the rear of his car when it was struck. He subsequently died from his injuries.

The driver of the third vehicle, a man in his 40s, was uninjured.

The scene was examined by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators.

A senior investigating officer has been appointed to lead the investigation.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision to come forward.

They are particularly interested in hearing from road users who were travelling on the R132 near Smithstown, Julianstown between 1.30am and 2.30am on Saturday, 15 August.

Anyone with dash-cam or other camera footage from the area at the time is asked to make it available to investigating gardaí.
