A new direct air route between Dublin and Shanghai has been unveiled as part of Ireland’s ongoing strategy to expand its global tourism reach.
Minister for Tourism Peter Burke confirmed that China Eastern Airlines will operate the new service, marking only the second direct connection between Ireland and China. Currently, Hainan Airlines runs a direct route between Dublin and Beijing.
The announcement forms part of Tourism Ireland’s broader efforts to tap into emerging international markets and drive visitor growth in 2026. It follows the rollout of the Government’s tourism strategy, A New Era for Irish Tourism, and the Market Diversification Action Plan introduced last year.
As part of this initiative, Tourism Ireland has strengthened its international presence, establishing new representation in both the UAE and India—regions previously without dedicated support. Additional resources have also been allocated to mainland Europe, enabling year-round promotional campaigns in key markets such as Germany and France.
Minister Burke said the new Shanghai route represents a significant step in strengthening Ireland’s global connectivity and tourism potential.
“As we advance the Government’s Action Plan on Market Diversification, I am pleased to announce progress in securing new global opportunities through deeper engagement in China, the UAE, and India,” he said.
“China is a significant growth market for Ireland, and we now have a direct Dublin to Shanghai flight for the first time.”
He also highlighted the importance of expanding Ireland’s on-the-ground presence in strategic regions.
“I am also announcing that we will now have people in the market in both the UAE and India, where previously we had no representation,” he added.
Burke noted that increased activity in North America is also contributing to tourism growth, particularly with expanded operations on the US West Coast and in Canada, alongside improved air connectivity.
“Since my appointment as Minister, it’s been clear to me that we need more boots on the ground in locations where we have good connectivity and direct flights, to ensure we are capitalising on all opportunities to increase visitor numbers and support the 46,000 tourism SMEs across the country,” he said.
