Paul McCartney expects next year’s Glastonbury festival to be cancelled and the festival isn’t in his calendar for next year.
The former Beatle was due to headline this year’s event but the pandemic put a stop to that.
This week, McCartney has been promoting his new album that was released on Friday entitled ‘McCartney III’. Speaking to both The Sun Newspaper and BBC Radio 4, he has cast doubt over next year’s festival.
“100,000 people closely packed together with flags and no masks – you know, talk about super-spreader. I’d love it to (happen), but I have a feeling it’s not going to” said McCartney to BBC Radio 4.
Speaking to The Sun, he said “People have started to find ways (of live performing) with Zoom and with socially distanced things. But for a thing like Glastonbury where you’ve got over 100,000 people packed into a field, that’s a super-spreader, you know.”
He added “But I’ll be glad when we can get back – it will be a nice change to actually play to some people.”
However, Paul McCartney has said he will be the first in line to get the Covid vaccine when he is allowed to do so.
“The vaccine will get us out of this. I think we’ll come through it, I know we’ll come through, and it’s great news about the vaccine. I’ll have it as soon as I’m allowed“.
Earlier this week, Glastonbury organiser, Emily Eavis stated that they were doing everything possible to make sure the festival went ahead next year.
In an interview with NME, she said “We are wholeheartedly working on bringing the festival to you in June next year and we can’t wait to welcome everyone back to Worthy Farm. It feels extremely quiet right now.”
Eavis also appeared on BBC Radio this week and said “I think because we’re rolling two festivals together for 2021, we’ve got a hell of a lot of surprises that we were planning for the 50th”.
There has been confirmation of any acts or headliners for the festival. Eavis said “We had Paul McCartney for this year. It’s unbearable to think that’s not happening, because it would have been the ultimate way to see in our 50th year.”
“Logistically, it’s a little bit complicated, because we’d already planned quite a few acts for 2021. It was one of those unusual years where you’re quite far ahead on the line-up. So we’re trying to work out how much we can fit in to next year.”
