Paul McCartney has paid tribute to the late Grateful Dead guitarist, Bob Weir, who died aged 78.
The musician died last week, having previously diagnosed with cancer last July. Despite originally beating the disease, his family said that he "succumbed to underlying lung issues".
His death was confirmed by his family, who released this statement.
"For over sixty years, Bobby took to the road," the statement said. "Bobby will forever be a guiding force whose unique artistry reshaped American music".
"His work did more than fill rooms with music; it was warm sunlight that filled the soul, building a community, a language, and a feeling of family that generations of fans carry with them", they added. "As we remember Bobby, it's hard not to feel the echo of the way he lived".
Taking to Instagram, Paul McCartney has paid tribute to Weir, calling him "a great musician who inspired so many people".
Sharing a photo of the pair of them at McCartney's 2016 Boston Concert, the Beatles legend wrote: “Bob Weir was a great musician who inspired many people of many generations".
Speaking about their last meeting, McCartney added: “I last saw Bob when we went to the Sphere in Las Vegas to watch Dead and Co,” he said. “He was very welcoming, and during the interval in the show he invited us into his trailer, and it was a special moment to meet his family and friends".
“Bob showed me the recording set up that he had in the back of the bus so even though he was on tour he could make and record music; I offered to play the bass on one of the tracks he played me but unfortunately that never came to pass”.
McCartney also added that he valued Weir's humour, friendship and found his musical talents inspiring, as he sent condolences to Weir's family. See the post in full here.
News of this also comes as Paul McCartney's new documentary, Man On The Run had released its trailer.
The documentary will look at the music legend's journey as he formed his band Wings with his wife Linda, featuring previously unseen and rare archival footage. It is directed by Academy Award winner, Morgan Neville.
