Paul McCartney’s new studio album The Boys of Dungeon Lane is released today, marking the music icon’s first solo record in more than five years.

The deeply personal album sees McCartney reflect on his childhood in post-war Liverpool, his family life and the early friendships with John Lennon and George Harrison that would eventually help shape modern music history through the rise of The Beatles.

Featuring a mix of personal memories, introspective storytelling and newly inspired love songs, the record has been described as one of the most candid and emotional projects of McCartney’s legendary career.

Speaking about the inspiration behind the album title, McCartney says: “Whenever I go to Liverpool to go to LIPA, for instance, the back entrance to the airport is on a place called Dungeon Lane. And I remember that from when I was a little kid, because I used to wander off from the house, just on my own, with my little bird book.”

The singer also reflects on how his decades-long career with The Beatles, Wings and as a solo artist continues to influence his songwriting process. “The thing that pulls it all together is, it's me, you know, it's my brain making music,” he says. “I don't think, ‘wow, oh yeah. Well, let's do this. This is a Beatle idea, or this is a Wings idea.’ I don't think like that. I think it's all just current. It's me. It's just, this is what I do.”

Widely regarded as one of the greatest songwriters and musicians of all time, McCartney rose to global fame in the 1960s as a member of The Beatles, the most influential and best-selling bands in music history. Alongside Lennon, he helped create some of the most iconic songs ever recorded, including Hey Jude, Let It Be, Yesterday and Penny Lane. Following the band’s split, McCartney went on to enjoy huge success as a solo artist and with his band Wings, producing hits such as Band on the Run, Live and Let Die and Maybe I’m Amazed.

Across more than six decades in music, McCartney has won multiple Grammy Awards, been inducted twice into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1997 for services to music. He remains one of the most celebrated and commercially successful artists in history, with his influence continuing to span generations.

McCartney says he felt no pressure while making the record despite the long gap since his last solo release. “I'm very lucky that way, because I don't have a label breathing down my neck saying we need an album from you. It's my decision.”

He also explains that inspiration for the album came from everyday life and the music he absorbs around him. “I just think everything, just everything I was watching, doing and listening to. It just goes into your data bank,” he says. “I'm listening to a bunch of African music at the moment. It's in my brain. Those things are in my brain. They sometimes creep into something completely different.”

Since its announcement, The Boys of Dungeon Lane has received widespread acclaim from critics around the world, with publications including Rolling Stone, The Guardian, Variety and The Times praising the album’s emotional honesty, melodic strength and reflective songwriting.

Speaking about what he hopes listeners take from the album, McCartney says: “I hope they fall in love with the songs and the performances. I hope it takes them to a place of joy. I hope it sort of transports them because that's the best thing about music.” He adds: “I just hope people can just sit back, relax, and stick the vinyl on, or the headphones or the phone or stream it, or whatever, and just enjoy listening to it. That's my aim, to try and bring something that people can enjoy, and the more they enjoy it the happier I am.”

The Boys of Dungeon Lane is out now via MPL/Capitol Records.
