President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins, has spoken out about homelessness in his Christmas and New Year address to the people of Ireland and abroad.
While looking forward to what 2018 will bring, President Higgins reveals he would like to see a sense of 'hope and optimism' for each and every person and family.
The President stated: "The burden of homelessness will overshadow the festive season for those deprived of a secure and permanent shelter."
Because, President Higgins, believes there are many parallels between the state of the world today and that of 2,000 years ago when Christ was born, particularly in the search for a home.
Pleading with the public, the President requests that this celebratory festive season will be one of awareness and care towards those who for each day is 'an act of survival'.
President Higgins thanked all those who volunteer and lend their support to the vulnerable people among our society, describing their work as 'inspiring and uplifting' and stating it is the real will and capacity which exists among the people of Ireland.
"An Garda Síochána, the Prison Service, all of the staff in our hospitals and emergency services, and members of the Defence Forces serving abroad who are building or supporting peace."
Before wishing everyone a happy Christmas, the President called on the public to make a shared journey into 2018, 'encompassing the needs of all'.
