Work is beginning on an €80 million upgrade to the Ringsend Wastewater Treatment Plant in Dublin.

The facility is currently working over capacity, and will expand to treat the wastewater of an extra 400,000 people in the Greater Dublin Area.

Green Party TD for the area Eamon Ryan says the current plant can’t cope with demand, and is under extra pressure during a storm surge;

“So we had raw sewage going out into the bay – we were swimming in raw sewage in the bay..so that’s why the investment is needed. Everything is at overcapacity and at full strain We have to invest in wastewater and water – so we are not swimming in our own sewage – it’s as simple as that…”
