Police have confirmed that a man has been arrested in connection with the death of Stuart Lubbock. Mr Lubbock was found dead in a pool at TV star Michael Barrymore’s Essex mansion in March 2001.
A 50 year old man was questioned in custody, before being released on bail until April 12.
Michael Barrymore is allegedly “relieved” that an arrest has been made and he hopes it can bring some form of closure to Stuart Lubbock’s family.
Here is Barrymore discussing the death of Lubbock on Piers Morgan’s Life Stories a few years ago.
Barrymore and the other guests have always denied involvment in Lubbock’s death. They claimed that he was intoxicated and had accidently drowned.
“Some closure” for the Lubbock family
Mike Browne was Michael Barrymore’s PA from 1984 until 2003. He said that he has spoke to Michael regarding the arrest of this man.
“He just kept saying, ‘Let’s hope this time the police have enough evidence to charge someone for Stuart’s murder’, Mike Browne said.
Browne added, “Michael is just hoping that with this arrest and, maybe some new evidence, Stuart’s family can finally get some closure”.
“All they want to know is how Stuart was injured and how he died. They have lost a son and deserve answers. That’s what Michael wants above all else as well”.
“The theory is that someone came forward because of the reward”.
“Want justice for my boy” – Terry Lubbock
Terry Lubbock, Stuart’s father said that he was “pleased” that an arrest has been made. Terry Lubbock is terminally ill with cancer. His last wish is that he gets justice for his son’s death.
“This has been my life for the past 20 years”, Terry said.
He continued “I’m just pleased there’s been an arrest. I just want justice for my boy, that’s all I’ve ever wanted since this happened”.
Mr Lubbock also explained how he has had his “hopes up” in the past, before seeing them “dashed”.
He said, “I’ve had false dawns before. I’ve had my hopes up, then dashed. I just want this to be the breakthrough”.
“There’s not a day when it’s not with me. I hope it’s all over before I die”.
“Significant new information came to light”
Det Supt Lucy Morris of the Essex Police force had this to say.
“The man who was arrested in Cheshire continues to be questioned by our detectives”.
“The arrest comes after significant new information came to light following our renewed appeal for information and offer of an enhanced reward which coincided with a major TV documentary broadcast in February 2020″.
“We have never given up on finding out exactly what happened to Stuart, and we will not stop in our pursuit of justice for him and for his family and friends”.
“As we have said repeatedly over the last 20 years, nine people were at that party”.
“We know that not everyone was responsible for what happened, but someone was”.
It is also believed that a missing pool thermometer and a missing shed handle are believed to be vital pieces of evidence.
The investigation into Lubbock’s death gained momentum following the release of a Channel Four documentary: Barrymore: The Body and the Pool which aired in February 2020.
