A vehicle protest is taking place in South Dublin today, as demonstrators drive at low speed toward St. Stephen’s Green in opposition to the continued use of the Citywest Hotel to house international protection applicants.
The convoy, made up primarily of residents from the Saggart area, is the fifth such protest in recent weeks. Protestors are travelling at approximately 10 to 15 kilometres per hour, with many stating they are deliberately remaining in second gear to maintain a slow pace.
The demonstration stems from local concerns over the State’s use of the Citywest Hotel as accommodation for asylum seekers, a practice in place since 2020. The Government recently announced plans to purchase the site permanently.
Among those taking part in the convoy is Mia Colgan, who said the community is suffering and that locals feel their concerns are not being addressed.
Saggart resident Alan, told Nova News that they are 'just a group of worried parents' that want to have a meeting with Minister Jim O'Callaghan about the appointment of the Citywest Hotel.
Before the protest began, Gardaí briefed participants, informing them they were entitled to protest peacefully but emphasised the importance of not impeding others’ right to freedom of movement. Officers requested that the vehicles stay together and confirmed that a Garda car would lead and follow the convoy to maintain safety along the route, which began in Foxrock and is heading toward the city centre.
Gardaí say they will continue to monitor the protest to ensure public order and traffic flow are maintained.
