Gary 'Mani' Mounfield, the iconic bassist of The Stone Roses and later Primal Scream, has died at the age of 63. His death was announced on 20 November 2025.
Born in Crumpsall, Manchester, on 16 November 1962, Mani rose to national prominence as part of the Stone Roses’ classic line-up, contributing to their celebrated 1989 debut album.
His brother, Greg Mounfield, wrote: “It is with the heaviest of hearts that I have to announce the sad passing of my brother Gary ‘Mani’ Mounfield. RIP RKID.”

Mani’s bass playing was central to the Stone Roses’ sound—part of what defined the late-’80s/early-’90s “Madchester” scene—and later his work with Primal Scream added to his legacy.
He is survived by his twin sons, who were born in 2012, and his legacy remains a significant part of British (and Irish-inspired) rock history. His wife, Imelda, died of cancer in November 2023.
For our Irish readers, it’s worth noting Mani’s family roots in Ireland via his mother’s side and the pride with which he acknowledged that heritage.
