Fans of acclaimed kitchen drama The Bear are preparing to say goodbye after FX confirmed the hit series will officially end with its upcoming fifth season.

The network announced that the final season of the award-winning culinary dramedy will premiere on 25 June, with all eight episodes dropping at once on Hulu in the US, continuing the binge-release format that helped make the show a streaming phenomenon.

Season five will pick up immediately after the dramatic events of the previous finale, when Sydney (Ayo Edebiri), Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) and Natalie (Abby Elliott) discover that troubled chef Carmy Berzatto (Jeremy Allen White) has walked away from both the restaurant and the food industry entirely.

According to the official synopsis, the remaining team members will attempt to keep the restaurant afloat while facing financial collapse, the threat of a sale and mounting pressure to finally secure a coveted Michelin star.

The logline teases that the final chapter will centre on one last attempt to save the restaurant, while exploring the deeper emotional themes that have defined the series since it first debuted.

“Ultimately, they learn that what makes a restaurant ‘perfect’ might not be the food, but the people,” the synopsis reads.

The announcement came just a day after FX surprise-released a bonus flashback episode titled Gary, starring Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Jon Bernthal.

The standalone episode, now streaming on Hulu and Disney+, follows Richie and Mikey during a work trip to Gary, Indiana, offering fans another glimpse into the complicated history and emotional backbone of the Berzatto family story.

Created by Christopher Storer, The Bear premiered in 2022 and quickly became one of television’s biggest word-of-mouth success stories thanks to its frantic kitchen scenes, emotional storytelling and breakout performances.

The series turned Jeremy Allen White into one of Hollywood’s most sought-after stars, with the actor earning widespread acclaim for his portrayal of the brilliant but deeply troubled Carmy.

The show also helped launch Ayo Edebiri into superstardom, with the actress and writer becoming one of the entertainment industry’s fastest-rising talents following her performance as ambitious young chef Sydney.

Critics and audiences alike praised the series for its raw depiction of restaurant culture, grief, anxiety, family trauma and creative obsession, with many chefs saying the chaotic kitchen scenes felt uncomfortably realistic.

The first season dominated awards season, winning 10 Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Comedy Series, while the second season followed up with another 11 Emmy wins.

However, season three proved more divisive among viewers and critics, despite earning 13 Emmy nominations, ultimately failing to secure any wins.

Season four remains eligible for this year’s awards race, while the fifth and final season will compete during the 2027 Emmy Awards cycle.

Alongside White, Edebiri and Moss-Bachrach, the ensemble cast includes Lionel Boyce, Liza Colón-Zayas, Matty Matheson and Edwin Lee Gibson.

The series also became known for its high-profile guest stars and emotional cameos, featuring appearances from stars including Jamie Lee Curtis, Olivia Colman, Sarah Paulson, Bob Odenkirk, John Mulaney and Will Poulter.

Behind the scenes, Storer executive produces the show alongside Josh Senior, Cooper Wehde, Tyson Bidner, Matty Matheson, Hiro Murai and Rene Gube, while chef Courtney Storer serves as culinary producer to help maintain the series’ much-praised authenticity.

While fans will undoubtedly be disappointed that the series is ending, many viewers have already praised the decision to conclude the story on its own terms rather than stretching the show beyond its creative peak.

For FX, The Bear leaves behind one of the defining television dramas of the decade — a series that transformed a small Chicago sandwich shop into one of modern television’s most emotionally intense and culturally influential worlds.
