The Pogues’ festive hit ‘Fairytale Of New York’ is to be released on 7 inch vinyl for charity.

Last week, the Pogues lead singer Shane MacGowan was laid to rest in Nenagh, co Tipperary, having passed away aged 65 in November.

In a bid to get the classic Christmas tune to number one for the first time and “celebrate the man himself”, it is being released once again, to raise funds for charity.

All proceeds will go towards the Dublin Simon Community, a charity supported by Shane MacGowan and his widow Victoria Mary Clarke over the years.

The song is being released on vinyl by Shane’s family, friends as well as the Pogues.

“a special legacy”

The 7 inch vinyl single will be released with ‘Fairytale Of New York’ on the A-side, with the B side containing an instrumental version of the song.

Music fans can also pre order this special vinyl version of the classic track, with £6 from the sale of each product going towards the Dublin Simon Community. Pre order here.

Speaking about this initiative, Emma Kilkenny who is the head of Fundraising & Communications at Dublin Simon Community, was very appreciative of the efforts of the Pogues, and Shane MacGowan’s family.

“We would like to say a huge thank you to The Pogues and Shane MacGowan’s family for their generosity in creating such a special legacy for Dublin Simon Community with this release”, she said.

“Music is an emotional and visceral gift that can lift spirits and bring hope to people at their lowest point”.

She also added, “We share the truly magical memory of Shane’s performance at the very special Christmas Busk recorded in St Patrick’s Cathedral during Covid lockdown. The Christmas Eve Busk is a beating heart at the core of Dublin Simon’s fundraising and Shane was always a very welcome and truly amazing addition to this special event”.

Earlier this week, the students of Holy Trinity College in Tyrone, delivered a wonderful cover of the famous Pogues Christmas hit. Check that out here.
