The Who are set to release a new live album capturing their orchestral performance at the Eden Project in Cornwall, giving fans the chance to relive one of the band’s most ambitious recent shows.

The legendary rock group performed the special concert in July 2023, when they took to the stage alongside the Heart of England Philharmonic Orchestra at the iconic open-air venue. The show blended the band’s classic rock catalogue with sweeping orchestral arrangements, creating a unique version of some of their most famous songs.

Now it has been confirmed that the performance will be released as a live album in May, allowing listeners to experience the concert in full. The event itself formed part of The Who’s orchestral tour, which saw the band revisit many of their best-known tracks with the backing of a full orchestra.

Formed in London in 1964, The Who remain one of the most influential rock bands in music history. The group’s classic line-up included Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend, John Entwistle, and Keith Moon, and they became known for their explosive live performances and groundbreaking rock operas.

Over the decades the band released a string of iconic albums including “Tommy”, “Who’s Next”, and “Quadrophenia”, helping define the sound of British rock in the late 1960s and 1970s. Songs such as “Baba O’Riley,” “My Generation,” “Pinball Wizard,” and “Won’t Get Fooled Again” remain staples of rock radio and live performances around the world.

Following the deaths of Keith Moon in 1978 and John Entwistle in 2002, Daltrey and Townshend have continued performing as The Who, keeping the band’s music alive through touring and occasional new releases.

Their most recent studio album, “WHO,” arrived in 2019, marking their first collection of new material in 13 years. While the record was well received by fans, it remains uncertain whether the band will ever record another studio album.

Songwriter and guitarist Pete Townshend previously revealed that he would be open to making another record but suggested that convincing frontman Roger Daltrey could be difficult.

“There’s a bit of a river to cross,” Townshend said when discussing the idea of recording new material, hinting that the two surviving members may not share the same enthusiasm for returning to the studio.

Despite that uncertainty, The Who have remained active on the live circuit in recent years, continuing to perform to large audiences across the UK, Europe and North America. Their orchestral concerts in particular have introduced a new dimension to their music, combining the band’s powerful rock sound with full symphonic arrangements.

The Eden Project show was widely praised at the time for its scale and setting. The famous venue, known for its giant biomes and dramatic outdoor stage surrounded by botanical gardens, has hosted a number of high-profile concerts over the years.

For The Who, the performance offered a chance to revisit their vast catalogue in a fresh way while celebrating a career that now spans more than six decades.

The upcoming live album will allow fans who attended the 2023 Eden Project show to revisit the night, while also giving those who missed it the opportunity to hear the band’s legendary songs performed with orchestral backing.

While the possibility of a final studio album remains uncertain, the release ensures that The Who’s long legacy of powerful live performances will continue to be documented for new generations of listeners.
