A serious road traffic collision has caused major disruption in Dublin city centre, with part of O’Connell Street northbound and Abbey Street closed as emergency services attended the scene.
Gardaí, along with ambulance crews and Dublin Fire Brigade, were called to the incident at the junction of Abbey Street and O’Connell Street in Dublin 1 today midday.
The crash, which authorities have described as “serious”, is understood to have involved an e-scooter and a truck, though full details have not yet been confirmed.
Commuters have been particularly impacted, with services on the Luas Red Line suspended between Smithfield and The Point following the incident. Transport operators have confirmed that trams are currently only running between Tallaght/Saggart and Smithfield, with additional services operating towards Connolly/The Point on other sections of the line.
Passengers affected by the disruption have been advised that Luas tickets will be accepted on Dublin Bus for the duration of the outage, as efforts continue to manage the impact on public transport across the city.
The area around Middle Abbey Street, near the Supermac’s outlet just off O’Connell Street, was quickly cordoned off following the collision.
One side of O’Connell Street, stretching from the restaurant down towards the quays, was also sealed off, leading to significant traffic disruption in one of the capital’s busiest thoroughfares.
While emergency responders initially remained at the scene, it is understood that ambulances and fire services have since left the area. Gardaí have not yet confirmed whether there were any injuries.
Motorists and pedestrians are being urged to avoid the area around Abbey Street and O’Connell Street, with delays expected to continue while the scene is cleared and investigations are carried out.
Further updates are expected as gardaí continue to assess the situation.
