The US President has set himself against the FBI, by approving the release of a controversial memo accusing it of abusing its power. The President and his Republican allies are leading a campaign to detract from the U.S Law enforcement agency.

The document alleges the bureau wrongly put members of Donald Trump’s staff under surveillance, as part of an investigation into claims Russia interfered in the 2016 US election. The head of the FBI, Chris Wray, has pledged to defend his agents against an attack on what he calls the bureau’s independence.

Democrats warn the document is misleading and could harm national security. They maintain the four-page memo contains highly sensitive classified information which could lead to delude rather than inform. They state the information is being used with the intention to undermine Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s criminal probe into the Russia investigation launched in May 2017.

Having a go at American law enforcement leaders on Twitter just hours before the memo’s release, Trump said,

‘The top Leadership and Investigators of the FBI and the Justice Department have politicized the sacred investigative process in favor of Democrats and against Republicans – something which would have been unthinkable just a short time ago.’

The FBI, last week, had expressed ‘grave concerns about material omissions of fact’ in the document and urged that it not be made public. Writing on Twitter, Comey branded the memo “dishonest and misleading.”
