A man in his 20s lost his life in Co Limerick after the car he was driving struck a tree on the N21 at Cummeen, near Adare. The crash happened shortly before 3am.
The driver died at the scene. His remains have been taken to University Hospital Limerick ahead of a post-mortem examination.
There were two other people in the car. One, a man in his 20s, was seriously injured and remains in a critical condition in hospital. The other passenger, who is in his late teens, was also taken to hospital but his injuries are understood to be non-life-threatening.
The road was closed to traffic while a technical examination was carried out by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators.
Gardaí are now asking motorists who travelled on the N21 in the Cummeen area between 2.15am and 2.45am to contact them if they witnessed anything or have dash-cam footage that may assist the investigation.
In a separate incident in Co Meath, a man in his 50s died when his vehicle crashed into a premises on Connaught Street in Athboy.
The collision took place at around 2am. The man was the only person in the car and was pronounced dead at the scene.
His remains were removed to Our Lady's Hospital in Navan, where a post-mortem examination is due to be conducted.
Connaught Street was closed while Gardaí examined the scene, and diversions were put in place for road users.
Investigators are appealing to anyone who was in the area between 1.45am and 2.15am to come forward with any information. Gardaí are particularly interested in receiving relevant dash-cam or other camera footage.
