Widely regarded as one of the finest footballers ever produced by Ulster, McGuigan leaves behind a lasting legacy both on and off the field.

Known as “The King,” the Ardboe O’Donovan Rossa clubman became one of the most iconic figures in Gaelic football history thanks to his extraordinary skill, composure, and scoring ability. He won Ulster senior titles with Tyrone in 1973 and 1984 and received an All-Star award following his remarkable performances during the latter campaign.

McGuigan's most celebrated performance came in the 1984 Ulster final against Armagh, a game that has since become known simply as the “Frank McGuigan final.” He scored 11 points from play, producing one of the greatest individual performances ever seen in the provincial championship. The famous tale that he scored five points with his left foot, five with his right, and one with his fist has become part of GAA folklore.

McGuigan's skill with a ball has been the inspiration for many players we know today. Peter Canavan, for example, has often spoken about the impact McGuigan had on him growing up.

Although his playing career was cut short following a serious car accident shortly after receiving his All-Star award, McGuigan’s influence on Tyrone football continued through his family. His sons Brian, Tommy, Frank Jr, and Shay all represented Tyrone at senior level. Brian played a key role in Tyrone’s three All-Ireland-winning teams, while Tommy famously scored the opening goal in the 2008 All-Ireland final victory over Kerry. Frank Jr was also part of the squad that secured Tyrone’s historic first Sam Maguire triumph in 2003.

In a tribute shared online, Ardboe described McGuigan as a footballing genius whose impact extended far beyond Tyrone. The club praised his humility, love for GAA, and the inspiration he provided to generations of players.

While “The King” may be gone, Frank McGuigan’s name will forever remain woven into the history of Tyrone GAA
