Voters in Dublin Central and Galway West are urged to check their registration as today marks the last day to register ahead of the bye-elections.

For those who intend to use their vote in the upcoming bye-election must log onto checktheregister.ie and register or update their details by today.

The bye-elections in the two constituencies are set to take place on the 22nd of May.

Speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland, An Coimisiún Toghcháin's Communications and Public Affairs Manager, Brian Dawson, said: "If you have your details, your PPS number, your Eircode, your date of birth, we found it takes less than three minutes for people to get themselves on the register. But I suppose alongside new voters, what we're really encouraging people to do is to check that your details are up to date."

"So maybe you've changed address, maybe your citizenship has changed. It's really important to take less than five minutes today go on check your details are correct," he continued.

Art O’Leary, chief executive of An Coimisiún told the Independent that every year people turn up to polling stations wishing to vote, to then discover that they have not registered their name to vote. "Don’t be that person, act today, check your details online at CheckTheRegister.ie. Your vote is your voice, check the register today to make sure that your voice is heard in these important bye elections in Dublin Central and Galway West," O'Leary said.

The bye-elections are only being held in Dublin Central and Galway West. They are being held as there are two available seats in the Dail. A seat has become vacant in Galway West as Catherine Connolly was elected as President last October, who was previously a TD in that constituency. Another seat has become vacant in Dublin Central due to Paschal Donohue a TD in that constituency, resigning last November to take on a position at the World Bank.

The bye-elections will decide who will join Sinn Féin Leader Mary Lou McDonald, Social Democrats Gary Gannon and the Labour Party's Marie Sherlock in Dublin Central. Sherlock was the last to be elected in this constituency and claimed her victory over Independent Gerry Hutch.

Hutch is running for a seat in Dublin Central despite being under investigation and has currently zero known political policies.

We will also see who will be joining Sinn Féin's Mairéad Farrell, Fine Gael's Hildegarde Naughton, Fianna Fáil's John Connolly and Independent Noel Grealish in Galway West. Independent TD, Noel Thomas has been coined as the favourite for this constituency as it is likely he will be boosted by Independent Ireland’s prominence in the recent fuel price protests.
