Following Trev Dietz’s death on Sunday the 7th of June, The Workman’s Club changed their sign to honour the “champion of alternative music” who co-founded the nightclub in 2010.

He left his mark on Ireland’s growing music scene, managing Fontaines D.C. from their early days in the Workman’s basement to now headlining international shows with 6.5M monthly listeners.

As well as managing Fontaines D.C., Dietz will be remembered by many as not only being at the hidden forefront of Workman’s gigs, but for spearheading a key period of change in Dublin’s music and nightlife in the 2000s.

A statement on The Workman’s Club’s Instagram page said he was at the “forefront of the clubs and gigs that have been the heartbeat of our little corner of the world.

Trev’s impact and dedication to promoting new and upcoming bands in Ireland is hard to overstate. For decades he has been a champion of alternative music…music with heart, music with meaning, music with integrity, music with a true story to tell, music with a message that moves people and makes a difference in the world. That’s what Trev’s life was about,” the statement continued.

Dietz promoted gigs and clubs for over 25 years. At The Workman’s Club, he was the originator of Somewhere? Wednesdays, Dublin’s longest running club night.

He created a space of opportunity for bands to flourish, from local artists to breakout bands such as Fontaines D.C. and The Murder Capital in their early days.

Fontaines D.C. posted a statement on Instagram, saying that “Trevor was beside us from the beginning of our journey as a band, we have never known Fontaines D.C. without him, the sixth member of the band. He cared passionately for us and for what was fair and right in the wider world.”

Kneecap, CMAT, Inhaler and many more Irish bands and artists paid their respects to him in the comments section, appreciating his contribution to Ireland’s social scene and also the heartbreak of losing someone close to their hearts.

The Workman’s Club announced their new sign to honour Dietz through a video posted on their Instagram page with the caption “Trev Dietz’s Workman’s Club.”

A great little memorial for one of the best in the game,” one commenter wrote.

Another wrote “Beautiful. Trev was Workman’s and Workman’s was Trev.”
