Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston has defended his on screen wife Skyler White following recent backlash from fans for the character.

The actor spoke about this with his former Malcolm In The Middle co star, Frankie Muniz on Hot Ones Versus amid the comedy show's recent revival.

White, who is played by Anna Gunn, received a hostile reception from fans over recent years, which many viewers found strange, considering her husband went from chemistry teacher to a drug lord.

During their chat, Muniz admitted he was not a fan of the character.

“I loved Breaking Bad, obviously everyone in the whole world loved it. I wanted to kill Skyler to make your life easier,” Muniz said. “You were such a bad guy, you could’ve just gotten rid of her. All she did was complain".

However, Cranston was quick to jump to the defence on Skyler White.

“Now, see, she got a lot of blowback from that. Well, first of all, Anna Gunn is a superb actor, but she got, ‘Oh, why don’t you get off his back?’ Wait a minute", he said.

“Let me understand this. Her husband leaves without any explanation, she’s pregnant, he’s making crystal methamphetamine and people have died. And she’s the bitch? Like, we couldn’t understand.”

“When you put it that way, I guess,” Muniz responded.

This comes weeks after the trailer for Malcolm In The Middle: Life's Still Unfair went viral. The series sees Muniz once again take on the lead role as Malcolm, the highly intelligent middle child who tries to survive his heavily dysfunctional family.

The series will once again co star Bryan Cranston, who plays Malcolm's dad, Hal in the original show. Other names reprising their roles include Jane Kaczmarek as Lois, Malcolm's mother and Hal's wife, alongside Justin Berfield as Malcolm's uncouth brother Reese, Christopher Masterson as their eldest brother Francis, and Emy Coligado who will return as Francis' wife Piama.

One name who will not be returning for the revival series is Erik Per Sullivan, who reportedly turned down "buckets of money" to reprise his role as the family's youngest brother, Dewey, who will be played by Caleb Elsworth Clark.

According to Jane Kaczmarek, Per Sullivan is “studying Dickens and is an incredible student. They offered him buckets of money to come back, and he just said, ‘No thank you.’”.

She also added that “he goes to school at a very prestigious American university that he’s asked us all to be quiet about”, and that “I admire it because so many people think being in show business is the greatest thing in the world, it’s not for everyone.”
