A man in his 30s has died after reportedly swimming across the River Liffey following an alleged assault in Dublin on Saturday night.
Gardaí have launched an investigation and say they are examining "all the circumstances" surrounding the incident, which occurred at around 10.20pm in the area of the War Memorial Gardens in Islandbridge.
The man is understood to have entered the river after a reported assault near the gardens before swimming across to lands adjacent to Chapelizod Road.
Emergency services attended the scene and the man was treated by Dublin Fire Brigade personnel before being taken to St James' Hospital.
He died in hospital on Sunday.
Gardaí have confirmed that no cause of death has yet been established and that a post-mortem examination will determine the direction of their investigation.
A spokesperson said officers are investigating all of the circumstances surrounding the incident and are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
Investigators are particularly keen to speak with anyone who was in the area between 9pm and 10.45pm on Saturday night. They are also seeking road users who may have dashcam footage from the vicinity during that time.
