A 30-year-old man has appeared before Belfast Magistrates’ Court charged with attempted murder following a serious stabbing incident in north Belfast earlier this week.
Hadi Alodid, a Sudanese national with an address at Duncairn Avenue, Belfast, faces three charges arising from the incident. The charges include attempted murder, possession of a knife, and making threats to kill a hospital radiographer.
The case relates to the stabbing of a man in his 40s on Kinnard Avenue in north Belfast on Monday. The victim remains in hospital in a serious condition after sustaining severe injuries.
Mr Alodid appeared before the court via video link and was assisted by an interpreter throughout the proceedings. He declined legal representation and made no response when the charges were formally put to him.
During the hearing, a Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) detective inspector told the court that she believed there was sufficient evidence connecting the accused to the offences. The officer strongly opposed any application for bail, describing the alleged attack as an extremely serious incident.
The court heard that the victim suffered catastrophic injuries, including the loss of his left eye, damage to his right eye, and multiple lacerations to his face and back. Police also alleged that while receiving treatment for a hand injury in hospital, Mr Alodid made a statement to officers saying: “I killed someone, I don’t know if they’re dead.”
The detective inspector further argued that the case had attracted significant public attention and had contributed to public disorder in the area. She expressed concerns that releasing the accused on bail could heighten tensions and potentially lead to further unrest.
Additional concerns were raised regarding the defendant’s personal circumstances. The court heard that Mr Alodid has no family ties in Northern Ireland and is not currently employed. Police stated that these factors increased the risk that he could attempt to flee if granted bail.
District Judge Steven Keown refused bail, ruling that the risks associated with releasing the accused were “far too great and unmanageable with any bail conditions.”
Mr Alodid was remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear before the court again in four weeks as proceedings continue.
