Whether it's after a big night out or celebrating a major sporting event, many people have their own go-to hangover cure.

Some swear by a full Irish breakfast, others reach for a bottle of Lucozade, while smoothies and electrolyte drinks are also popular choices in the hope of easing the dreaded morning-after symptoms.

While there is no guaranteed cure for a hangover, experts say that choosing the right foods before and after drinking alcohol can help reduce some of the effects.

A hangover isn't a single medical condition but rather a collection of symptoms caused by alcohol and the toxic substances produced as the body breaks it down.

Common symptoms include headaches, nausea, tiredness, dehydration and low blood sugar.

According to public health nutritionist Dr Emma Derbyshire, one of the best foods to eat after drinking is eggs.

She says a protein-rich breakfast can help stabilise blood sugar levels, which often drop after consuming alcohol.

"Hangover eating habits vary from wanting to eat everything in sight to struggling to face a glass of water," Dr Derbyshire said.

"Choosing something light but energising is key – and that's where eggs come in."

"They're rich in nutrients and cysteine, which may help offset the effects of acetaldehyde, the substance behind that pounding head and uneasy stomach."

Experts also recommend adding avocado to your breakfast.

Avocados contain glutathione, a naturally occurring compound involved in the body's alcohol metabolism, while their healthy fats can help support the absorption of nutrients that may become depleted after drinking.

Although eating certain foods may help relieve some symptoms, health experts stress that the only real cure for a hangover is giving your body time to recover.

Staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water, getting enough rest and eating a balanced meal can all help your body recover more comfortably after drinking alcohol.

The healthiest option is to drink alcohol in moderation or avoid it altogether. The HSE advises that there is no level of alcohol use that is completely safe for health, and recommends keeping alcohol consumption within low-risk guidelines if you choose to drink.
