Nicolas Cage’'s Malibu mansion has been caught up in a major sinkhole emergency after a huge crater opened on the street outside the actor’s $10.5 million beachfront property.
The sinkhole appeared on Sea Level Drive in Malibu early Tuesday morning, with firefighters initially responding to reports of a possible gas main break. The collapse swallowed part of Cage’s driveway and left a large section of the road unsafe.
Malibu officials later declared a local emergency and ordered evacuations in the area as the sinkhole continued to pose a serious risk to nearby homes. The latest reports say 31 properties on Sea Level Drive were evacuated, with seven homes red-tagged and deemed unsafe for occupancy.
The sinkhole has been estimated to measure around 30ft by 60ft and is approximately 25 to 30ft deep.
The collapse also caused a gas leak, which was brought under control by emergency crews. Gas supplies were temporarily shut off along part of the street as a precaution.
The mansion, which Cage reportedly bought for $10.5 million in 2024, sits between the Pacific Ocean and the Pacific Coast Highway. The property itself has not been reported as structurally damaged, but access to the area has been severely restricted because of the unstable ground.
The dramatic collapse came after days of heavy weather and powerful waves along the Southern California coast. The remnants of Hurricane Marie brought heavy rain and high tides, with coastal erosion believed to have played a role in the damage.
Nicolas Cage has not been seen at the property since the sinkhole appeared, and his representatives have not publicly commented on the situation.
Emergency crews are continuing to monitor the area, with officials warning that further erosion and changing weather conditions could create additional risks for residents.
