Gardaí are to engage in a work-to-action next month, which will coincide with a major EU Presidency of leaders in Dublin on November 13.

The rank-and-file gardaí are to engage in this, following a meeting of the Garda Representative Association Central Executive Committee, with this move being staged due to dissatisfaction with garda working conditions.

This work-to-rule will begin on Tuesday November 10, before finishing on Saturday, 14 November, which includes the European Political Convention on November 12, as well as the informal meeting of EU heads of state or government the following day.

In a statement, the GRA have also hinted that a further escalation of this action could be on the cards.

"The GRA's executive will now meet on Monday morning, accompanied by their legal counsel, to discuss this position and further accelerated actions right up to and including a withdrawal of services", GRA General Secretary, Ronan Slevin said to members.

This motion also calls on members who are stationed in Dublin Metropolitan Region to report for duty at their home station at the beginning of their tours of duty, before being transported to their points of duty.

It also says that members within 100km of their points of duty in the DMR and Shannon should report to their home station and wait to be transported to their points of duty.

In a statement to their members, the GRA said: "All members who are stationed more than 100km from their points of duty (in the DMR and Shannon) should not use their private vehicle to get to, or from, their points of duty during the extraordinary event".

Elsewhere, the GRA have also accused Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly and garda management of breaching terms from the Working Time Agreement and the European Working Time Directive, with Mr Kelly responding by saying that overtime would be reduced shortly.

He said that the reduction of overtime available would happen "once we complete some forthcoming major events".

"I'm not unsympathetic to members of An Garda Síochána", Mr Kelly said. "I know they've worked long hours, they've put in a lot of effort for us, and I certainly do appreciate it". (All quotes according to RTÉ).
