Blur bassist, Alex James has said that it is unlikely that Blur will reunite anytime soon, saying that they “need to let Oasis get their stuff out of the way” first.
James made these comments while speaking to Radio X, where he was asked about the possibility of him reuniting with Damon Albarn and co. He had revealed that he had been to see Albarn play live at London's Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with Gorrilaz last week.
“Absolutely smashed it,” James said of his former bandmates' show. “Going to see Gorillaz, it’s like – have you seen La La Land? You know, the bit at the end of La La Land where the girl goes to see Ryan Gosling. Emma Stone goes to see Ryan Gosling, and they’re both kind of living their dream, but they’re not together anymore".
At this point, host Chris Moyles had said that Blur were “ticking along nicely”, to which James had reminded the presenter that the band's recent shows happened “a long time ago now, [in] 2023”, which saw the band play two live shows at London's Wembley Stadium, before ending the reunion with some live slots at Coachella in 2024.
Referring to Oasis' huge reunion tour last year, James continued: “I think we need to let Oasis get their stuff out of the way before we even sort of countenance".
When Moyles joked that Blur could have headlined Knebworth this year, James jokingly replied: “No, no. Honestly, honestly, I don’t want to poke that hornet’s nest again, trust me!”, referring to the band's much publicised Brit-Pop rivalry of the 1990s.
In April last year, Alex James had praised Oasis for reuniting, calling it "wonderful", adding that it was "awful that most bands end up hating each other".
“It was great for Blur and I’m delighted for the Gallaghers", James told The Sun at the time. “From Blur’s point of view, huge parts of how I feel every day… the fact there was a reconciliation and we’re all on good terms again… because when something is such a big defining part of your life you don’t want to be exiled from it".
Back in March, Alex James also began his 'Britpop Classical' tour with a set of strong orchestral covers of Blur, Oasis, Stone Roses, Radiohead and more. This showed James performing with a live full orchestra, rock band and chorus. The shows also include special guests, Reef's Gary Stringer, Republica's Saffron, and 'Parklife' icon Phil Daniels.
