The Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors is welcoming the introduction of body worn-cameras for gardaí by the end of this year.
Minister for Justice, Simon Harris, will bring forward legislation next week for the use of body cameras.
Figures show there were 285 incidents where officers suffered injuries during an attack last year, an increase from the 243 cases that were reported in 2021.
Antoinette Cunningham – General Secretary of the AGSI – says Ireland is “years behind” other police forces in introducing body-worn cameras:
We have been talking about this for some time. We are significantly behind other police forces. It really is time that they were introduced.
