A diver has been killed following a shark attack in Western Australia.

The shark attack, which is the 4th fatal shark attack in Australia this year, occurred off of Michaelmas Island, about 388km southeast of Perth.

Reports indicate that the man was spear fishing when the 4.5 metre long shark attacked. The victim was treated by paramedics on the shore.

Western Australia police have stated "A 35-year-old man was spearfishing with family off Michaelmas Island when he was attacked by a shark. He was conveyed back to shore by boat where he was met by St John Ambulance, Western Australia paramedics. Sadly, he was unable to be revived"

The State has warned people to take additional caution and stay clear from shark sightings in the area.

This is the second fatal shark attack in Western Australia, following a great white attack last month near Perth.

Scientists believe that global warming, which has lead to  rising ocean temperatures, have changed the sharks migratory patterns, which may be causing the rise in attacks.

Around 20th shark attacks are reported in Australia each year, most of which are not fatal. However the average for shark related fatalities sits at 3, 2026 is already above average with 4 fatal attacks.
