Fans have reacted to Green Day avoiding using political statements during their live set at the Super Bowl opening ceremony.

This comes as the band performed a medley of their biggest hits at the event at Levi's Stadium field.

It was what the band did not do which got the fans talking on social media, with Green Day avoiding any lyrical rewrites to their songs for these performances, including singing  “I’m not part of the MAGA agenda”, for their track, 'American Idiot', a regular feature at recent shows.

Prior to 'American Idiot', Green Day also played 'Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)'. They also treated the audience to a live performance of 'Holiday' and 'Boulevard of Broken Dreams'.

This comes after Billie Joe Armstrong and co had performed an invite only show at Pier 29 as part of the Super Bowl celebrations, where they voiced their opposition to ICE agents, as part of Armstrong's long standing feud with US President Donald Trump.

"Quit your s—ty ass job. Quit that shitty job you have.” He went on to add, “Because when this is over, and it will be over at some point of time, Kristi Noem, Stephen Miller, JD Vance, Donald Trump — they’re gonna drop you like a bad f—king habit. Come on to this side of the line", the singer told the crowd.

"so disappointed"

On social media, fans shared their thoughts on Green Day refraining from making any political points on stage at the Super Bowl ceremony.

“That songs been out since the late 2000s! where was the same energy from the night BEFORE where they called out everyone involved in the epstein files?? so disappointed", one fan wrote. While another one added: “Green Day had THE opportunity to be political and they rested on ‘American Idiot’ to make a statement?”.

Another added: "Green Day skipping a whole verse of ‘American Idiot’ and about 80% of the words to ‘Holiday’ — which is probably their most political song ever — is absolutely disappointing. Shameful. I’m angry. Green Day literally sold out to the media".

"Green Day saying absolutely nothing political during that performance is a sign how far we’ve really fallen in Punk Rock", another fan commented.

However, some fans did jump to the band's defence.

"Just putting out there that in this US political climate Green Day doing "American Idiot" at the Superbowl is a wonderful act of rebellion & the meltdown could be even better than when certain groups realise Rage Against The Machine are political", one fan stated.

"Gotta give Green Day credit", another said. "They didn't make any political statements during their set. Good for them. I know it's the literal bare minimum to ask for, but for some reason a lot of people aren't capable of that".
