Foo Fighters have officially unveiled their latest single “Asking For A Friend,” a soaring, emotional anthem that marks the next chapter in the band’s journey — and one that arrives hand-in-hand with the announcement of their massive 2026 Take Cover Stadium Tour.
The band — Dave Grohl, Nate Mendel, Pat Smear, Chris Shiflett, Rami Jaffee, and their new drummer Ilan Rubin — shared the track yesterday, teasing fans with its artwork and a short audio snippet before its full release at 3pm BST. The post read simply: “ASKING FOR A FRIEND. ARRIVING TOMORROW.”
The single follows “Today’s Song,” which was released in July to mark the 30th anniversary of the Foo Fighters’ self-titled debut. The new track, however, feels more personal — a reflection on hope, endurance, and the unbreakable bond between the band and their fans.
In a heartfelt note to fans, Dave Grohl wrote about the band’s creative revival and the emotional weight behind this new phase. “Since our return to the stage in San Luis Obispo five weeks ago, we have been reminded of why we love and are forever devoted to doing this Foo Fighters thing,” he said. “From reuniting as a band and staring at a list of 30 years worth of songs to brush off, to reimagining versions with the incredible blessing of the one and only Ilan Rubin behind the drums, to reconnecting with our amazing fans and blasting them with everything we’ve got — because we would not be here without them — we have the most solid core. And the sun is finally rising over the horizon.”
Grohl continued, “But none of this would be complete without new music to share from Pat, Nate, Chris, Rami, Ilan and I. ‘Asking for a Friend’ is a song for those who have waited patiently in the cold, relying on hope and faith for their horizon to appear. Searching for ‘proof’.”
The song carries emotional weight not only as a message of perseverance but also as part of the band’s ongoing evolution following the tragic loss of their longtime drummer Taylor Hawkins in 2022. Grohl paid moving tribute to him in the same statement, writing: “Taylor, your name is spoken every day, sometimes with tears, sometimes with a smile, but you are still in everything we do, everywhere we go, forever. The enormity of your beautiful soul is only rivaled by the infinite longing we feel in your absence. We all miss you beyond words. Foo Fighters will forever include Taylor Hawkins in every note that we play, until we do finally reach our destination.”
He also took a moment to acknowledge former members who helped shape the band’s story, adding: “It should go without saying that without the boundless energy of William Goldsmith, the seasoned wisdom of Franz Stahl, and the thunderous wizardry of Josh Freese, this story would be incomplete. We extend our heartfelt gratitude for the time, music, and memories that we shared with each of them over the years. Thank you, gentlemen.”
The 2026 Take Cover Tour will see Foo Fighters headline some of North America’s biggest stadiums next summer, with support from Queens of the Stone Age, Mannequin Pussy, and Gouge Away.
