Green Day have shared a music video for their new single ‘Bobby Sox’, from their new album Saviors.

Bobby Sox is the latest track to be released by the band as a preview for Saviors, having previously released The American Dream Is Killing Me, One Eyed Bastard, Dilemma, and Look Ma, No Brains!

Green Day shared One Eyed Bastard earlier this month. Check out the track and Nova’s report here.

“The 90s song we never wrote”

In a press release, Green Day lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong called Bobby Sox “the 90s song that we never wrote”.

“’Bobby Sox’” is one of my favourite songs on the album,” Armstrong said. “It’s the ’90S song that we never wrote. It started out being a song I wrote for my wife but as it materialized, I wanted to switch it up and added, ‘Do you wanna be my boyfriend?’ on top of ‘Do you wanna be girlfriend’… So the song becomes a kind of universal anthem”.

In a recent interview, Billie Joe Armstrong also addressed the panic over trans issues.

Bobby Sox is a track which explores gender fluidity, with Armstrong branding the moral panic over such issues as “f****** close-minded”.

In the second verse of this song Armstrong sings, “Do you want to be my best friend? / You can drive me crazy all over again / And I’ll bore you to death / Doesn’t matter when we are in love / You’re not just any type of girl / My one true love and you’re my world / Do you wanna be my girlfriend? / Do you wanna be my boyfriend?”.

“brought a tear to his eye”

The singer said that he played the song to a friend, which “brought a tear to his eye when he heard the second verse”.

“Nowadays it’s more common for kids to be LGBTQ, and there’s more support. But for us, back in the day”, he said, before speaking about the late 80s and 90s “that was like the beginning of when people were able to openly say things like that.”.

He also added, “I just think they’re fucking close-minded. It’s like people are afraid of their children. Why would you be afraid? Why don’t you let your kid just be the kid that they are?”.

Billie Joe Armstrong also recently said that he would love to work with Olivia Rodrigo. He called the prospect of working with the singer “fun”. More here.

As well as their new album Saviors, Green Day have also said that they will perform albums Dookie and American Idiot in full at this upcoming tour.
