Back in Stockholm, Greta Thunberg has described what she and dozens of other activists faced after being detained by Israeli forces during the interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla, a mission carrying aid to Gaza. Thunberg says the conditions in Israeli custody were “cruel and degrading,” with activists crammed into “tiny cages” and denied essential medicine.

When asked about media coverage of her experience, she made clear: “I do not want there to be headlines about Greta being tortured. Because that is not the story here.” She insists the focus should be on the treatment of all detainees and the humanitarian crisis, not on her personal narrative.

Other detainees have corroborated her account. They report being denied medication, held without proper rest, forced to sit on hard surfaces, suffering from bedbug infestations, dehydration, and being forced to hold flags or be “paraded” in degrading ways. Some activists say they were blindfolded, zip-tied, and prevented from speaking with lawyers. Thunberg herself developed rashes she suspects came from bedbugs.

This flotilla — the Global Sumud Aid Flotilla — involved about 40-plus vessels with roughly 450 activists from many countries. Their goal was rowing symbolic humanitarian supplies and drawing attention to Gaza’s worsening humanitarian conditions under the blockade. The flotilla was intercepted in international waters, leading to detentions and deportations.

Sixteen Irish citizens were among those detained, according to Irish government sources. They have been transferred to a detention facility in southern Israel, and the Irish Foreign Ministry has said its priority is their safety and wellbeing. Organisers and activists have called on the Irish government to take all possible steps to ensure treatment in detention meets international law.

Meanwhile, on a broader scale, the war in Gaza continues to generate a severe humanitarian crisis. Reports show hunger levels alarming, displacement widespread, shortages of food, medicine, water and shelter. More recently, a ceasefire deal has been agreed upon between Israel and Hamas, aimed at stopping ongoing hostilities, releasing detainees, and allowing increased aid into Gaza.

The flotilla incident has provoked international outcry. Human rights organisations, European governments (including Ireland), and UN observers have criticised how Israel handles detainees and how the blockade of Gaza contributes to what many call collective suffering under international humanitarian law. Israel defends its actions, saying the blockade is legal, that activists were treated according to law, and that it intercepted vessels which it views as trying to breach the naval blockade.

For Thunberg, the experience has made her more determined to highlight what she sees as systematic deprivations. She emphasises this is not about victimhood, but about drawing attention to people’s rights. “What we suffered pales in comparison to what the Palestinians experience daily,” she said.
