Protesters will gather in Dublin later today to highlight the death of Yves Sakila.

Last week, the 35 year old was detained by a number of security guards after an alleged shoplifting incident. A video has been circulating on social media which shows a number of security guards restraining the man face down on the ground.

Sakila became unresponsive on the scene and was taken to the Mater hospital where he sadly died.

Sakila was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo but grew up in Galway and Dublin.

According to the Press Association, Gardaí were alerted of an incident on Henry Street after security guards had Sakila detained. They stated that a man in his 80's was also injured as the suspect attempted to flee the scene. The man was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Black Coalition Ireland held a press conference earlier today and called for an investigation into the death of Sakila. They have also organised a demonstration outside the gates of Leinster House which will take place later on today.

Gardaí told BBC news that investigations into "all circumstances" are continuing and there are "no significant updates".

The department store, Arnotts, said in a statement that they were "deeply saddened" by the death of Sakila which occurred outside of their store on Grafton Street. The store extended "heartfelt sympathies" to his family, his friends, and the wider Congolese community in Ireland.

Irish Network Against Racism said the case "appears" to have "hallmarks of a case of excessive use of force".

"The death of a black man in such circumstances is extremely worrying, and we urge the authorities to thoroughly investigate all of the circumstances leading to this man's death, in order to ensure minority ethnic community confidence in the criminal justice system," they continued.

"It's such a tragedy that has impacted our community and is something that has been a shock and such a very saddening moment for the Congolese community," he continued.
Taoiseach Micheál Martin said that the case must be thoroughly investigated. He said: "My deepest sympathies go out to his family, and to the wider Congolese community. The situation will have to be thoroughly investigated, and needs to be thoroughly investigated. I don't want to prejudice the outcome of that investigation but I think a lot of people are clearly very concerned about what has transpired here."
