An Irish hitchhiker responsible for Foo Fighters forming has been identified.

The hitchhiker in question whose name is Lorcan Dunne, was identified via a video posted on social media which was filmed in 1994.

This video shows a future Foo Fighters’ frontman Dave Grohl talking about what inspired him to return to music following the tragic death of Nirvana bandmate Kurth Cobain, and the band’s subsequent demise.

Footage of this was posted via X from Dunne’s cousin Eoin Tighe, who explained that he believed that Dunne was the man that Grohl spoke to in this video, and is ultimately the reason that Grohl returned to the music studio following Cobain’s death in 1994.

“soul-searching”

In the video itself, Dave Grohl reveals that he had a “soul searching” trip to The Ring of Kerry in Ireland.

Following Cobain’s death, Grohl said that he wanted to “disappear” and go to the “most remote place on earth” while he grieved for his late friend and bandmate.

“I’ve been before. It’s so beautiful there. You really feel like you’re at the end of the Earth. I was driving around in my rental car on a country road and I saw this hitchhiker kid. And I thought, ‘Well, maybe I’ll pick him up’. And as I got closer to him, I saw that he had a Kurt Cobain t-shirt on”, the Foo Fighters lead singer says.

“It was Kurt’s face looking back at me…in the middle of nowhere!”.

Did Lorcan Dunne Inspire Foo Fighters?

In the video which you can check out below, Lorcan Dunne explained how the pair met from his perspective.

“We were down on the Beara Peninsula on a holiday and we hitched up to this place to go swimming. I was running and I saw a car there, so I thought I’d run up and hitch. When I was hitching, I looked into who was sitting in the passenger seat – but it was David Grohl”, he recalled.

“I didn’t recognise him firstly, but I saw this look of shock on the guy’s face… and I had a Nirvana t-shirt on with Kurt Cobain on it”.

He continued: “It was black tie dye, the one with Kurt where he has the mascara on his face. I saw the look of shock and the next thing, the car just tore off, away. And I turned round like, ‘That was David Grohl lad!’ Nobody believed me!”.

Lorcan Dunne also said that he saw the video of Grohl’s interview when it clicked.

“I was like, ‘There you go, that was me!’”, he said.

On seeing Cobain’s face on the t-shirt he had on him, Dave Grohl also added: “I realised like, ‘Oh. I can’t outrun this’. So I need to go home and fucking get back to work. And so I did”.

Foo Fighters have yet to comment on the matter.

Last month, Noel Gallagher revealed that he refused to speak to Dave Grohl over his attempts to get Oasis back up and running. More on this here.
