The Luas Red Line will fully reopen tomorrow, three months after services between Connolly and The Point were suspended when a fire severely damaged a bridge at George’s Dock in the IFSC.
The blaze, which broke out in late August after a fire broke on George's Dock Bridge, causing a gas pipe to catch fire, took several hours to bring under control and forced an immediate shutdown of that section of the line. Since then, Transport Infrastructure Ireland has overseen extensive safety repairs and a full reconstruction of the affected bridge. The Commission for Railway Regulation has now approved services to resume.
The disruption affected thousands of daily commuters, with over one million journeys made on the Luas network every week. Around 20,000 of those are typically on the Connolly–Point stretch alone — a key link for workers, residents and concert-goers heading toward the Docklands.
Ben Dwars, Chief Executive of Transdev Dublin Light Rail, welcomed the reopening, saying: “We are delighted to see the completion of the George's Dock Bridge works and to reopen Luas Red Line services between Connolly and The Point. Having this section restored in time for the Christmas season is hugely welcome.”
The operator also thanked construction teams and passengers for their patience throughout the three-month closure, noting the works were essential to ensure the safety and reliability of the line ahead of one of the busiest travel periods of the year.
