A man in his 60s has died following what has been described as a head on collision between a car and bus along the Cork-Waterford boarder, which also injured more than a dozen others.
This makes for another grim weekend on Irish roads, as four people died on separate accidents in Waterford, Wexford, Limerick and Meath. It also means that a total of 138 people have died on Irish roads so far this year, an 11% increase on the same period last year.
This latest incident happened just before 8pm on Sunday evening, which saw a car and a coach crash into each other on the N25 Youghal to Dungarvan road, near Piltown.
The Irish Independent have also reported that the car sustained severe damage, while the driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene.
It was also found that more than a dozen people travelling on the bus were injured, but none of them are believed to be life threatening. A number of them were taken to hospital for precautionary assessment, having been initially treated at the scene.
Almost a dozen ambulances, garda cars and fire brigade units responded to the scene from Dungarvan and Youghal. The N25 was also closed in order to allow for the emergency services to carry out their work. It has since fully reopened.
This morning, Gardaí have also released the following statement.
“Gardaí are appealing to anyone who witnessed the collision to come forward", they said. “Road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling on the N25 between Grange and Pilltown Cross between 7:30pm and 8:00pm are asked to make this footage available to the investigating Gardaí".
