Lionel Messi's popularity has fallen sharply following the 2026 FIFA World Cup, according to a new YouGov survey.

Before the tournament, 55% of Britons said they viewed the Argentina captain favourably, while just 9% held an unfavourable opinion.
Following the World Cup, those figures have changed significantly. The poll found that only 29% now view Messi favourably, while 44% have an unfavourable opinion of him.
That means Messi's net favourability rating has dropped from +46 before the tournament to -15 afterwards.

The survey also found that his current rating is lower than long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo, whose net favourability stands at -2.
The shift comes after a controversial World Cup campaign for Argentina, who were beaten 1-0 by Spain after extra time in the final.

Several incidents involving Argentine players attracted criticism during the tournament and after the final whistle.
Midfielder Enzo Fernández was sent off during normal time, while post-match clashes involved Leandro Paredes, who appeared to confront Eric García and Gavi during heated scenes.
Nahuel Molina also appeared to be involved in an altercation with Spain captain Rodri after the match.

Messi himself came under scrutiny during the final after appearing to appeal for Marc Cucurella to be punished following an incident in which the Spanish defender briefly placed a hand over his mouth. However, neither the referee nor VAR took any action.
According to FIFA's tournament regulations, covering an opponent's mouth during a confrontational incident can result in a red card, although officials did not deem the incident to warrant punishment.
Despite the controversy, Messi was widely praised for his performances on the pitch, finishing the tournament with eight goals.
He was also seen congratulating Lamine Yamal after the final whistle, while tensions remained high between several other players.
Spain secured the World Cup title thanks to Ferran Torres' extra-time winner in the 106th minute, ending Argentina's hopes of retaining the trophy.
