A biopic about Ozzy Osbourne is officially “full steam ahead” at Sony Pictures, with Jack Osbourne revealing that a “big, brilliant actor” is already in mind to play the Black Sabbath frontman.
The long-gestating project, which has been in development since it was first announced in 2021, will chart the life and career of Ozzy Osbourne, the Black Sabbath legend widely known as the “Prince of Darkness”, alongside his wife and manager Sharon Osbourne, who played a central role in shaping his solo career and public image.
Speaking in an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Jack Osbourne confirmed that the film is now moving forward at pace at Sony Pictures, with the script completed and only final adjustments being made before a director is attached.
He said: 'We have full steam ahead. We've been in development at Sony for years now. The script is done, we're just making some final tweaks and hopefully get a director attached pretty soon.'
When asked whether casting had already been considered for his father’s role, Jack strongly suggested that the production already has a lead in mind.
He added: 'We have someone in mind, a really brilliant, big actor and we're very excited if it works out the way we hope.'

He also joked that Shameless star William H. Macy could potentially portray him in the film, adding a lighter note to the otherwise serious update.
Jack Osbourne has also recently confirmed that the project is now targeting a 2028 release window, reflecting the scale of development still ahead despite years already spent in pre-production.
In a separate update on his YouTube channel, he reiterated that momentum behind the film is strong, saying: “We are moving ahead… The script is right there. We are good. This movie will absolutely happen.”
He added that the production is now entering the next major phase, with plans to attach a director and move towards full casting.
The screenplay is being written by Oscar-nominated writer Lee Hall, best known for Billy Elliot and Rocketman, with production led by Sony Pictures and Polygram Entertainment.
Jack described the project as a “labour of love” for the family, while acknowledging that audiences should expect a longer timeline before it reaches cinemas.
The film itself is expected to explore the full arc of Ozzy Osbourne’s life — from his early days with Black Sabbath, through his solo career success, chaotic public image, and his long-standing partnership with Sharon Osbourne, who helped transform him into a global cultural figure.

The biopic has taken on added emotional weight following Ozzy Osbourne’s death in 2024 at the age of 76, with the project now serving as both a career retrospective and a legacy piece for the Osbourne family.
Earlier this year, Jack also revealed that a “phenomenal” actor had already been linked to the lead role, although no official casting has yet been confirmed.
Interest in music biopics has surged in recent years following the success of films such as Rocketman, with multiple major music stories now in development across Hollywood.
With a completed script, early casting discussions underway, and production teams beginning to assemble, the Osbourne biopic is now firmly transitioning from long-running development into active production — bringing one of rock’s most iconic stories one step closer to the big screen.
