Gardaí have confirmed that a post mortem examination is to be carried out after the body of a woman was found in Killarney, Co Kerry yesterday.
Since reporting the news of the woman's body being found in Killarney, she has been identified as Jamey Carney, aged in her 40s.
Ms Carney who was pronounced dead at the scene, was found at her home on the Muckross Road yesterday by a family member yesterday afternoon. They raised the alarm.
Gardaí believed that Jamey Carney died after force was used. Originally from America, Jamey had lived in the area for a number of years.
It was confirmed that a post mortem examination is to take place at University Hospital Kerry, with Gardaí saying that this will determine the course of their investigation. They have appealed for witnesses to come forward.
Following this, Women's Aid chief executive, Sarah Benson spoke to RTÉ Radio One, where said that there is a "real and urgent problem with violence against women, including fatal violence".
She said that if reports are correct, 286 women have suffered violent deaths in Ireland since 1996.
It was revealed in the All Island Femicide report maintained with colleagues working in The Women’s Aid Federation in Northern Ireland, that between 2020 and now, 82 women have died violently, including 52 in Ireland and 30 in Northern Ireland.
In this interview with RTÉ Radio One, Sarah Benson also said that the fourth National Domestic, Sexual and Gender Based Violence Strategy looks at the "prevention, recognising harm to children and also really surfacing the need for that coordinated policy".
