Rob Dieperink, a referee who was dropped from FIFA's officials list for the 2026 World Cup, has died aged 38.
His death was confirmed by a statement from the KNVB, the Dutch Football Association.
"We have learned with shock and deep sadness of the passing of Rob Dieperink", they said. "With the passing of Rob, the football world loses a valued referee with international experience, but above all, we lose a fine colleague".
"Our thoughts go out to his family, friends, and everyone who held him dear. We wish them much strength and support in coping with this great loss".
While FIFA said: "On behalf of the entire football community, we extend our sincerest condolences to his family and friends and the Dutch Football Association. May he rest in peace".
Mr Dieperink, had been selected as a video assistant referee (VAR) official at this year's tournament, but was removed from the list back in May after being arrested for sexual assault the in April. This was after the Metropolitan Police arrested Mr Dieperink following an allegation of sexual assault against a teenage boy.
However, the case was ultimately dropped due to a lack of evidence.
After being dropped as an official for the World Cup, Mr Dieperink said in an interview that he had been "wrongly accused" of sexual assault.
Speaking to Dutch newspaper, De Telegraaf, Mr Dieperink said: "It saddens me greatly that I have been wrongly accused".
"From the beginning, I have fully cooperated in the police investigation and also immediately gave full openness to Fifa, Uefa and the KNVB", he added. "I am grateful for the support I have received from the KNVB and the way in which they have dealt with this case. It is a pity that Fifa has decided not to appoint me for the World Cup any more, of course I am disappointed about that".
Rob Dieperink had been refereeing in the Eredivisie since 2017, the Dutch domestic football league, and was a VAR official at Euro 2024. He began his professional career as a referee in 2011/2012.
He was also the VAR for Crystal Palace's 3-0 victory over Fiorentina in the quarter final of the Europa Conference on April 9.
