In a poignant and deeply personal reflection, Robert Plant has paid tribute to Terry Reid, the mercurial singer-songwriter whose raw talent, near-mythic career decisions, and uncanny ear for potential altered the course of rock history. Reid passed away yesterday, leaving behind not just a cult legacy, but one of the most pivotal “what ifs” in modern music.

Reid’s story is often told as a tale of the gig that got away. Offered the frontman role in what would become Led Zeppelin, Reid declined, opting instead for existing commitments, and, depending on which version of the story you believe, a measure of loyalty, or sheer professional pragmatism. Either way, he passed Jimmy Page’s attention onto a then-unknown Robert Plant. The rest is thunderous, world-conquering history.

Plant, now reflecting on the man who handed him that destiny, described Reid with admiration and affection that feels almost fraternal.

“Terry Reid’s enthusiasm and encouragement were incredible back then,” Plant said. “Still teenagers, we crashed each other’s gigs and crucified Season of the Witch time and time again. So much fun. So on it. He was all of everything. Such charisma.”

That charisma – that unteachable electricity – was just one piece of what made Reid a singular presence. Plant’s admiration runs deeper still, describing Reid as a vocalist with impossible range, a songwriter whose work defined the spirit of a generation: free-spirited, unfiltered, untamed.

“His voice, his range. His songs, capturing that carefree era. Superlungs, indeed. He catapulted me into an intense new world he chose to decline.”

It’s not just eulogy. It’s a recognition of parallel lives, one that exploded into stadiums, and one that opted for the backrooms and the smokier end of legend. In a performance together in 2004 at The Joint in LA, Plant told the crowd: “This man should have had my life… mind you, I’m not sure he’d want it!” To which Reid, with perfect timing, replied: “I wouldn’t mind some of the money!”

That one exchange says it all. Terry Reid could’ve been one of the biggest. Instead, he became something rarer: a cult icon whose influence echoes through others.

Robert Plant’s final words are the most heartbreaking:

“I listen now to his album The River and shed a tear for my brother in arms.”
