Rory McIlroy - Award

Rory McIlroy has reached a rare kind of sporting immortality — he now has a trophy named after him.

The Rory McIlroy Award was officially unveiled at the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai, celebrating McIlroy’s remarkable achievement earlier this year when he became Europe’s first-ever winner of the Career Grand Slam. The award will be presented annually, starting with the 2026 season, to the DP World Tour member who records the strongest overall performance across all four Major Championships in a single year.

According to the DP World Tour, the new accolade will go to the player who earns the most Race to Dubai points cumulatively from the Masters Tournament, US PGA Championship, US Open, and The Open. The concept is designed to reward excellence across golf’s most prestigious events — a standard McIlroy himself has defined throughout his career.

However, the Northern Irish golfing star won’t ever be able to win it himself, precisely because it bears his name.

The decision to name the award after McIlroy follows his emotional triumph at the 2025 Masters Tournament, where he defeated fellow Ryder Cup teammate Justin Rose in a playoff to finally claim the Green Jacket. The victory completed his Career Grand Slam — adding to his U.S. Open (2011), PGA Championships (2012, 2014), and The Open Championship (2014) titles.

In doing so, McIlroy joined an elite group of just six golfers in history to have won all four men’s Majors — alongside Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, and Tiger Woods. His win at Augusta was celebrated across the golfing world as both a career-defining moment and a triumph for European golf.

Reflecting on the new award, McIlroy said: “To have something named after you, that will be presented to future generations of players, is a huge honour and it is very humbling.” He added: “It certainly means a lot to me because the DP World Tour was where I started my career. I’ve always loved playing on it and representing Europe in the Ryder Cup. I’m incredibly proud to be the first European to achieve the Career Grand Slam.”

The 36-year-old, who is also chasing a seventh Race to Dubai title, said he looked forward to personally presenting the award in future seasons. “The Majors represent the pinnacle of our sport, and I hope my success can inspire other DP World Tour members to chase and achieve their own dreams for years to come,” he said. “I look forward to seeing who becomes the first recipient of this new award in 2026 — it will be a very proud moment for me.”

Guy Kinnings, Chief Executive of the DP World Tour, praised McIlroy’s legacy and influence on the game: “Whilst Rory will no doubt go on to achieve many more great things during his career, as a Tour we wanted to commemorate his historic achievement of becoming the first European winner of the Career Grand Slam.” He added that the new trophy will serve as “a permanent legacy that we hope will inspire future generations of DP World Tour members aiming to follow in Rory’s footsteps.”

The Rory McIlroy Award now joins the DP World Tour’s most prestigious honours named after legendary players, including the Seve Ballesteros Award (Players’ Player of the Year), the Harry Vardon Trophy (Race to Dubai winner), the Henry Cotton Award (Rookie of the Year), and the John Jacobs Trophy (Legends Tour Order of Merit).

As the DP World Tour confirmed, McIlroy will be ineligible to win the award himself, even if he tops the Race to Dubai points list across the Majors — a fitting irony for a player whose career has consistently set the standard for others. The Tour has yet to clarify what would happen if McIlroy himself were to achieve the highest points total in a given year.

Regardless, the announcement cements his place among golf’s all-time greats. Having conquered every Major and inspired a generation of European golfers, Rory McIlroy now stands as both competitor and symbol — a living benchmark of excellence whose name will forever echo through the game’s highest honours.
